The Ford F-250 is called a Super Duty to denote its purpose as a work truck, with capability above and beyond that of the more casual Ford F-150. But is bigger always better when it comes to choosing the best truck for the job?
Car and Driver praises the Super Duty for its raw power, and huge menu of configuration options and add-ons. The F-150 can't come close to the F-250's 6.7-liter Power Stroke Turbo Diesel engine, which cranks out an intense 440 horsepower and 925 pound-feet of torque. Its max towing capacity is 21,000 pounds.
With great power comes great responsibility, however, and the F-250 Super Duty suffers some drawbacks in the name of capability.
In Car and Driver's highway test, the 6.2-liter V8 Super Duty XL 4x4 they were driving averaged a measly 13 mpg. It certainly won't be winning any awards for fuel economy. Their fleet-configured model was also austere on the interior, offering only the basics for technology and entertainment.
By comparison, the Ford F-150's 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine rivals the Super Duty's gas engine in horsepower, torque, and trailering, boasting a maximum 12,200-pound tow rating when properly equipped. Since the F-150's engine has less mass to move, it can deliver a much sweeter 25 mpg highway. Plus, if you can wait for the refreshed 2018 F-150 to arrive, you'll be treated to the latest class-exclusive tech innovations a truck has to offer.
